Jobs in Yellowknife

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories in north Canada. In one of its native languages Dogrib, the city is called Somba K’e. This city is the center of economic activity in the province.

The city boosts of a mining industry, government services, transportation industry, and service industry.

The Mining Industry
Diamonds, gold and copper are home to the city of Yellowknife. Diamonds were recently discovered leading to the opening of mines since 1998. More mines are still to open with De Beers, being one of the companies interested in increasing mineral activity. Other minerals mined include uranium, tantalum as well as tungsten. This makes the industry have a market for jobs. The jobs available in this industry include: miner jobs, engineering, wastewater management, management, and insurance.

The Tourism Industry
The largest renewable industry in this city has been noted to be tourism. Yellowknife is the chief entry point for tourists in the Northwest Territories. A large number of the tourists are from Asia. Tourists get to experience the climate and traditional lifestyle and view the Northern Lights. More than US$100 million was spent by visitors to the territory. Jobs available in the industry are: hospitality, food service, environmental management, natural resources management, telecommunication, construction and marketing.

The Service Industry

This industry has contributed immensely to the economic growth of the city. Yellowknife was once a center of government services before the shift to mining after the discovery of diamonds. The industry also consists of retail, real estate, health service, education, commerce, communication, administration, federal government, insurance, legal services and management.

The Transportation Industry
An up to date transportation industry is housed in the city. The airport is the busiest in the whole of Canada handling over 30 000 tonnes of cargo as well as more than 400 000 passengers annually. There are ice roads which are open mostly in winter and because of these, Yellowknife becomes the dispatch point for an abundance of truck drivers. Jobs available in this industry include: aviation personnel namely pilots, air hostesses, air traffic controllers, cargo handlers; management, drivers and mechanics.
