Timaru has a very vibrant services sector, which employs a lot of people for example the city has a big retail industry that is concentrated on the Stratford Street area, which houses a number of shopping malls, the retail industry provides jobs for shop owners, managers, salesmen, shop attendants/assistants.
The tourism sector is another provider of job opportunities, and employs tour guides, hotel managers, chefs, waiters, tour bus drivers, taxi drivers, etc. the city has many tourist attractions which are worth visiting such as the South Canterbury Museum, the Aigantighe. Journalists, editors, cameramen, photographers can find jobs in the media sector. The city is serviced by the Timaru Herald which is the local daily newspaper, and there is Port FM, Classic Hits FM, and Radio Caroline New Zealand. The sports industry is also a major employer, and provides jobs for coaches, sports administrators, etc
. The major sports in Timaru are cricket, netball. Swimming, boxing and rugby.
