Shiraz is the fifth most populated city in Iran and the capital of Fars Province. Shiraz is very important to the Iranian economy. Shiraz is has the Suez Canal which was opened in 1869 that allowed the extensive import of inexpensive European goods to be imported directly from Europe or from India. The area has farmers who engage in the planting of cash crops such as opium poppy, tobacco, and cotton.
