Shiga is a prefecture of Japan which is part of the Kinki region on Honshu Island. Shiga’s capital is the city of Otsu.

Shiga is home to Lake Biwa which is Japan’s largest lake and is located at the center of this prefecture. The lake takes up to 16% of Shiga’s total area. The prefecture is surrounded by mountains among which are the Hira Mountains in the west, the Ibuki mountain range in the east, and the Suzuka Mountains in the southeast. The prefectures two regions the northern region and the southern region have significantly differing climates with northern Shiga being colder with higher snowfall than southern Shiga which is usually warmer.

The areas industry is well developed with a number of major companies such as IBM Japan, Canon, Yanmar Diesel, Mitsubishi, and Toray having factories in Shiga. These industries are the major employers and jobs offered include engineering, mechanics, auto-mechanics, electricians, electronics technicians, IT personnel and human resourses personnel.

The city is very popular as a tourist destination as there are temples and castles around the area that are of historical importance. The most attractive feature in Shiga that lures tourists to this region is Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. If you are to take a look at Japans map you will find that the lake lies central and has been termed to look like Japan’s belly button. Visitors to the lake can either get there by car or by boat. The lake is very scenic with some white-sand swimming beaches and a side where you can be able to get a view of cities such as Nagahama, Hikone, and Omi-Hachiman.

There are also places that visitors can go to in order to get the best view of the lake and such a place is from mountain roads like the Oku-Biwako Parkway road up north and the Hiei-zan Driveway and Oku-Hiei Driveway overlooking the southwestern shore. Some hotels have some superb views of the lake such as the Prince Hotel in Otsu. The tourism sector is a source of revenue and a creator of jobs in this city, job areas include hotel catering, transport services, security services, tour services, insurance, and other services that are associated with the tourism industry.

Shiga is also home to some famous buildings such as the Hikone Castle which is regarded a national treasure. The castle tower is being preserved well and is a true reflection of how a real castle looked during Japan’s feudal period. The historic monuments such as the castle also offer some jobs for archeologists and other scientific fields that are related to the preservation of historic monuments.
