Jobs in Nunavut
Although it is still a relatively new territory, the Nunavut area is the largest in Canada. It was part of the Northwest Territories before it was separated to become the eastern region. The name means the land of the Inuit.
It is the least populated region in the world. The economy of Nunavut is dominated by the construction industry, the service industry, the tourism industry the fishery industry, the arts and crafts industry and most important of all the fur industry.
The Fur Industry
This industry is based on the traditions of the Inuit community and thus is traditionally an important industry. Trade has been done in arctic fox pelts, caribou clothing and more recently seal fur. Jobs in the industry include: hunting, natural resource conservation, hospitality, skin processing, processing of other by-products.
The Construction and Services Industry
Since the split from the Northwest Territories, Nunavut got a new governing body. This created jobs in the government meaning there was a boom in the population. The construction industry benefited from this boom through the construction of government buildings and homes. The service industry also experienced a boom as there was a higher need for services from this sector. A lot of businesses sprang up to cater for the growth in population. The Tourism, Arts And Crafts Industry
The tourism industry is a major contributor of the economy as the natural beauty of the territory attracts tourists. The arts and crafts industry gets it raw materials from the hunting industry. The Other Industries
The other industries that are in the municipality include the mining industry and fishery. Nunavut is home to some of the most valuable minerals: diamonds and gold, oil and gas extraction. The fishery sector is traditional one for the Inuits of which the main market is from the tourism industry. The jobs available include mining, construction, environmental management, wastewater treatment and management, and maintenance.
