Jobs in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is a province situated in the south-eastern coast of Canada. The Latin version of the name is New Scotland. Nova Scotia is one of the founding provinces of the Canadian Confederation. Although it is the second smallest province, it has a dense population which is still growing. The economy of this province is based on natural resources such as agriculture, mining, forestry and fishery and on tourism, finance, technology as well as music and film.

The Forestry Industry
This sector grosses $700 million annually making it the third most important industry. Nova Scotia is the largest exporter of Christmas trees globally. Forestry is well developed. The major activity is pulp and paper manufacturing. Jobs can be found in these sectors: ecology, environmental management, manufacturing and forestry.

The Mining Industry
This industry has played a significant role in the growing economy contributing $610 million to the economy of the province. The minerals that are found here include gypsum (it produces over 85 percent of the total gypsum in Canada), barite and salt. There is also the offshore production of oil and gas. Oil and gas production have been known to be very important to any economy. There is still extensive exploration of oil and gas. There are various jobs that can be found in the industry which include: research especially for the discovery of more oil fields, construction, engineering, wastewater engineering, environmental management, scientists, and miners.

The Tourism Industry
The tourism sector is of importance to the economy of Nova Scotia. Visitors in excess of one million visit the province and more or less three quarters of these are from within Canada. More than $800 million has been generated from this sector which employs about 30 000 people. The jobs generated by this industry include those within hospitality, casino, transport, natural resource management, food service.

The Agricultural Industry
The agricultural industry is highly specialized. The largest sector is the diary industry. Other sectors include piggery production, poultry and egg production, beef cattle production as well as horticultural crop production. The most important products are the blueberries, juices fruits like apples as well as vegetables which can be exported. The jobs available: research, irrigation, environmental engineering, horticulture, agronomy, livestock management.
