Jobs in Mashhad

Mashhad is one of the largest cities in Iran after Tehran. It is also one of the holiest cities in the Shia Islam world. It lies in the centre of the province of Rasavi Khorasan and to the east of the capital city. The name Mashhad basically means the place of burial of martyr. This is because Imam Reza was buried in that city and a shrine was built there. The shrine is of fundamental importance because Mashhad is a pilgrimage centre. The city is proximate to Afghanistan and Turkmenistan.

Mashhad is also a major transportation centre. The Mashhad International Airport serves the city. There are not only domestic flights to other cities in Iran but also international flights to other Arab countries. The city also has a metro system. The railway system is controlled by Raja Trains, who have two major termini. Freight trains are also available. In this industry, the available jobs include pilots, drivers, air and rail traffic controllers, mechanical engineers.

Tourism is a contributor to the economy. Because Mashhad is a pilgrimage centre, pilgrims are the most visitors to the city. The minimum number of tourists that visit the city exceed 12 million annually. The sites of major interest include the tombs of Imam Reza and his shrine as well as the tombs of his followers and the tomb of Nadir Shah. The amusement parks are a major attraction for children. There one can ride the biggest Ferris wheel in Iran. The city also houses a zoo that keeps a lot of wild animals. There is the Shah Public Bath which has been restored and turned into a museum. To accommodate the visitors, a number of hotels, motels, inns, restuarants have been constructed. People can get jobs as museum curators, archaeologists and record managers; hotel personnel, chefs, waiters or waitresses, accountants, auditors.

Mashhad is a renowned centre for religious learning. The most important traditional centre in the city is the Madrassa of Ayatollah Al-Khoei. The city attracts students who are into religious education from all over the world. The biggest university is the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Other notable universities are the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, the Razavi University of Islamic Sciences. Jobs here are mostly educational based: lecturers, researchers, administrators, deans, principals, matrons, bursars and librarians.

Mashhad acts as the administrative centre of the Mashhad County. The city is divided into thirteen administrative units. The city is renowned for its carpet manufacturing industry. It is also a well known trade centre for wool and agriculture.
