The South Coast is the narrow coastal belt which runs from the north to the border in the south of the south eastern part of the state. Illawara is a region in the South Coast of New South Wales It is a coastal region which is characterized by a lake known as Lake Illawara which is in the central region.

Agriculture is limited due to the harsh climate that does not support or encourage in its full capacity. The few that are practiced include dairying. Jobs in this sector range from skilled milk man, veterans and food scientists and technicians in the processing of the milk and milk products. Some vegetable crops are also grown at a small scale. Fishing is also limited due to the strong currents that limit aqua life. Never the less fishermen, the few required is a job opportunity presented.

Wood chipping is a major practice in most towns in the South Coast; This involves chipping wood which is used in the manufacture of wood products. An example of the products is paper wood chipping has opened doors to the export industry. Employment though limited is available in the manufacturing of woodchips. These are exported.

Illawarra’s main industries in the area are farming, coal mining and steel making. Mining has always been an industry that has a high level of employment. Jobs like miners, underground geologists and environment coordinators are available. The running of the mine involves marketing agents, human resources, business administrators and accountants. Farming is a sector that involves labor in the field in the planting and harvesting seasons. It extends from beef cattle, dairy to vegetable crops. Farmers are required to maintain and control pests, and ensure quality of the milk and the crops. The processing of the products requires diverse qualifications. Technicians are required in the production process, supervisors, food scientists, and cleaners.

Tourism is the dominating industry that is responsible for most of the employment opportunities The South Coast and Illawarra has to offer.
