Jobs in Hamilton

Hamilton is the centre of New Zealand’s fourth largest urban area, and is the country’s seventh largest city. The city is rapidly growing and today ha a population of over 130,000 people, with almost half of the New Zealand population living within a radius of 250 km from Hamilton.

Education and research play a pivotal role in the city. The city has some institutes such as the University of Waikato, the Waikato Institute of Technology and a research center at Ruakura. These institutes have been responsible for much of New Zealand’s advances in agriculture. The institutes have also benefited the people of Hamilton by providing them, with jobs in fields such as agronomy, forestry, animal science, veterinary, IT, engineering and many other jobs that are associated with research.

Hamilton hosts the National Agricultural Fieldays which happens to be the southern hemisphere’s biggest agricultural trade exhibition. The agricultural show allows the people of Hamilton to showcase their agricultural advances as well as get to see how other countries abroad are doing it. The show also creates job opportunities for people during exhibition and jobs created include public relations personnel, show administrators, security personnel and other jobs that are associated with shows.

Manufacturing and retail are also important to the local economy. The city boasts New Zealand’s largest aircraft manufacturer, Pacific Aerospace, and has the largest concentration of trailer-boat manufacturers. These industries are very important in that not only do they generate revenue for the economy they also are responsible for the creation of jobs in architecture, engineering, carpentry, mechanics, electronics, auto-mechanics and other jobs that are associated with product sales and marketing.

In recent years there has been the establishment of the New Zealand base for the British flight training organization CTC Aviation. The academy trains over 100 airline pilots every year at its center at Hamilton Airport. The training center is another source of employment as experienced pilots can join the institute as trainers, and other job fields such as in engineering and air plane maintenance are also offered for the smooth running of the institutes operations.

Hamilton has some reputable health services these are mainly delivered from the city’s main hospital Waikato Hospital which has around 600 beds and a staff of approximately 2,500. There are also some private hospitals such as the Braemar Hospital and the Southern Cross Hospital. All these hospitals deliver good services to the Hamilton populace as well as providing jobs for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, clerks, administration personnel and other jobs that are associated with the health sector.
