Esfahan is the third largest city in Iran after Tehran and Mashhad. It is the provincial capital of the Esfahan Province. The city once held the title of the largest and most beautiful city in the world. It was a prosperous centre for the trade of cotton and silk. The city has managed to retain a significant part of its glory with its architectural monuments hence it has been titled as “Esfahan is half of the world”.
The city is celebrated for its architecture of Iranian and Islamic origin. Esfahan houses the biggest squares world over like the Naghsh-e. There are also ancient monuments from the Sassanid and Safavid dynasties, mosques, churches, palaces and bridges. Esfahan has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
